René Sève is a graduate of the Ecole Normale Supérieure, holds an agrégation in philosophy, and a doctorate degree in Law. He also has advanced postgraduate degrees in Philosophy, Social Psychology, and Law.

From 1981 to 1989 he was a professor of philosophy at Université Panthéon-Assas Paris 2. From 1986 to 1992 he was General Secretary of the Fondation de l’Ecole Normale Supérieure. From 1988 to 1989 he was an assistant professor at the Université de Neufchâtel and in 1990 at Boston University. In 1990 he was nominated research director at the Centre national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS). From 1990 to 1993, he held various positions within the French Ministry of Industry where he worked on European and International affairs. From 1995 to 1997, he served as the Director of European Affairs at the Association Nationale pour la Formation des Adultes (AFPA) and, from 1999 to 2002, chief of staff for the Undersecretary for Foreign Trade. From 2002 to 2005, following his nomination as contrôleur général économique et financier, he served as the head of mission for the economic and financial supervision of Public Audiovisual corporations and then for the Cinema and Cultural Operators mission. In 2005, he was nominated Contrôleur budgétaire et Comptable ministériel at the Ministry of Youth, Sports, and Associations. From 2007 to 2010, he was the General Director of the Centre d’analyse stratégique, a member of the Conseil d’Analyse Economique, the Haut Conseil à l’Assurance Maladie and the Conseil d’Orientation des Retraites, He is currently Contrôleur budgétaire et Comptable ministériel at the French Ministry of Justice.

He is the author of a number of publications, notably Philosophie du droit (Dalloz 2007) and Penser globalement la protection sociale (Temps réel, 2010). He also directs the Archives de Philosophie du droit (the latest volume published was entitled L’e-justice, Dalloz 2011).
